Q & A

These questions were suggested by people in Ireland who have been impacted by cancer. The answers were collected from experts based in Ireland.

I am exhausted all of the time. I’m not interested in having sex. Is this normal?”

Yvonne O’ Meara

“Yes this is 100% normal! The biggest side effect to a cancer diagnosis is fatigue. One of the many  fall outs from fatigue is lack of interest in having sex. For some cancer patients sex is not a priority during active treatment. It is most likely after treatment that you turn attention to your sex life, or your significant others reminds you of it if in a relationship. It is important to communicate to your partner if you are in a relationship that you would prefer to just hug and or kiss without the expectations of sex. This will allow the closeness to remain between you both until such time that you feel ready.

If you are single, it may take you sometime to re engage in your previous dating habits, this too is normal. Throughout our lives, our sex life changes for a variety of reasons. So what was right for you before cancer, maybe different for you post diagnosis.”
